What technology do you need?

Most people find that it is the “bandwidth” of their Internet connection that has the biggest impact on the speed of downloading information.

The basic tools required for the online parts of the workshops are:

  • Pentium level or comparable Macintosh personal computer
  • A reliable Internet connection that you can count on daily!
  • A modem capable of at a very minimum 28.8 Kbs per second, but we recommend nothing less than a 56K modem.
  • You will find having a DSL or cable modem connection will have a dramatic positive impact on your ability to work in the online classroom - you won't worry about your connection 'timing out' while you read discussion boards and other course contnent.

Check with your phone/cable companies to see what is available in your area and to determine monthly costs. It may be well worth the investment!

  • Most of the courses employ web–based systems, so no special software is required to read materials or participate in discussions, just a web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Firefox, AOL, etc.).
  • On occasion, you may need a specific plug–in or viewer application for your browser to view media materials (videos or audio files). They are typically free to download and quick to install.
  • You will do coursework offline that will be turned in electronically. For compatibility, Microsoft Office products (esp. Word, Excel and/or PowerPoint) are strongly encouraged. Contact the Pierce College Bookstore or a local retailer for educational pricing.
  • If you have technical difficulties, immediately alert your instructor and check with the Distance Learning office to see if we can lend assistance!
