Washington State community and technical colleges' Centers of Excellence are flagship institutions that:
- Help build and sustain our state's business and industry's competitive advantage through systemic fast and flexible education and training programs, and
- Create educational pathways for individuals seeking opportunities for high wage careers.
Centers of Excellence:
- Focus on a targeted industry that drives economic development in Washington State.
- Are linked to High Demand and High Wage programs.
- Have an established reputation for innovative, flexible, and responsive education and training that supports the targeted industry needs.
- Function as a “one–stop” shop for the targeted industry by providing a library of resources, data, and information that includes but is not limited to current labor market forecasts, the future direction of the targeted industry, leading edge educational programs, and diverse educational delivery methods that can be used to support community and technical college response to the targeted industry.
- Provide coordination, support, coaching, and mentoring to other community and technical colleges serving the targeted industry.
- Support seamless educational transition through K-20 collaborations and articulations.
- Lead or participate in industry Skill Panel and use industry defined skills standards as a basis for educational programs.
- Create and disseminate educational “best practices” used to serve the targeted industry.
The COE at Pierce College is for Homeland Security. It is a coalition of all 34 community and technical colleges, public agencies, and private sector organizations dedicated to delivering dynamic Homeland Security training statewide.
The COE serves as system leader, facilitates curriculum development in related programs, connects with Federal/State educational resources, disseminates information and facilitates articulation processes within the system and with appropriate partners.
