Homeland Security Department Plagued by Problems, Panel Told

The Department of Homeland Security still faces serious management hurdles, and lacks a coherent strategy for filling gaps in port, border and aviation security, a panel of experts told a Senate panel Wednesday morning.

WWU institute to focus on border

A new institute at Western Washington University will focus on how to keep commerce flowing across the Canadian-U.S. border while keeping the border secure. Congress approved $1 million last month to help establish a border research institute at Western. The university will provide staff support, student assistance and some capital costs.

AWR 160-1 Trainer Certification!

The Center for Domestic Preparedness has announced that the CDP is ready to begin the process of trainer certification to teach the six hour WMD Standardized Awareness course (AWR 160). This certification is designed to provide credentialing and course materials to previously qualified awareness and HAZMAT trainers.

Follow-up Review of the Status of IDENT/IAFIS Integration

In a recent report, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) finds that the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State “have not agreed on a uniform fingerprint Technology Standard nor agreed how to develop a fully interoperable system that provides law enforcement agencies with ‘readily and easily accessible’ access to IDENT and US-VISIT immigration records as directed by Congress.”

State awarded $45 million in HLS grants for 2005

Washington will receive $45.3 million in federal fiscal year 2005 for homeland security programs, according to the Department of Homeland Security budget guidance released Dec. 3. “While the total dollar amount is not as high as in 2004, Washington’s share of the federal homeland security funds in 2005 will maintain a high level of support for the state’s homeland security preparedness,” said Gov. Gary Locke.
