ICE Issues Warning About Fake Law Enforcement Badges

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

Citing “serious homeland security and public safety implications,” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is urging the public to report anyone displaying or distributing counterfeit law enforcement badges. The warning comes in the wake of an ICE seizure of more than 1,300 counterfeit police badges in New York earlier this week. According to ICE, the badges resembled those of “many different federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies around the nation, including those of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the New York Police Department.” ICE said its agents have begun an investigation “to determine the intended recipients of these badges and to track down any counterfeit badges that may have fallen into the wrong hands.” The agency is asking the public to report any suspicious activity through its toll-free hotline, operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The number is 1-866-DHS-2ICE.
