This program prepares students for positions as emergency medical technicians. Students learn to perform basic life support and some advanced procedures in emergency situations. EMT's are skilled in patient assessment and recognition of diagnostic signs and symptoms of major injuries and illnesses. They also learn to use ambulance, rescue vehicle and hospital emergency room equipment.

Persons interested in this program should have maturity in dealing with others as well as co-workers. They should have manual dexterity and physical coordination for carrying, lifting, extricating, climbing, hoisting and other activities. They also should be able to give as well as receive written and verbal instructions and have good vision and visual color discrimination for examining patients to determine diagnostic signs requiring immediate treatment.

Weapons of Mass Destruction: The Health Care Professional's Response

The UNLV Institute for Security Studies (ISS) responding to the Nevada Legislature mandated educational experience for healthcare professionals relating to nuclear, biological, incendiary, chemical and explosive medical responses is sponsoring this workshop on, Weapons of Mass Destruction: The Health Care Professional's Response.

In cooperation with Area Health Education Counsel (AHEC), classes will be held throughout the spring to meet this requirement. An ISS lecture series will also be available in which the lectures presented by experts in homeland security will provide citizens and business owners with an overview of the current situations and provide information concerning response and preparedness.

The S.M.A.R.T. Certificate Program is also available. Security professionals or those working in potentially volatile situations will benefit from this certificate program, taught by a former SWAT commander. The program consists of four courses, any of which may be taken without completion of the certificate. Each course within the certificate will consist of one day of hands-on training. Required courses for completion of the certificate are: Conflict Management in the Workplace, S.M.A.R.T. Restraint Techniques, Self-Protection Strategies and Techniques, and Team Training for Workplace Conflict.

The Undergraduate Minor in Security Studies offers students an opportunity to gain a broad interagency perspective on security issues and affords the student additional educational requirement not offered in their chosen major field of study. Students acquire the skills in writing, communications, and analysis that are critical to working in a career field related to national security.

Emergency Management Administration Certificate

The courses for the Emergency Management Administration Certificate were developed by Fairleigh Dickinson in collaboration with the National Guard Bureau to provide the training and skills needed by Guard personnel and first responders who are involved in planning, policy-making, implementation and administration of emergency management. This certificate can be earned by selecting any four of the offered 3-credit courses for a total of 12 credits. All credits earned can be applied toward FDU's 30-credit Master of Administrative Science program.

Global Security and Terrorism Studies

The courses in Global Security and Terrorism Studies Certificate were developed by Fairleigh Dickinson University in collaboration with the National Guard Bureau . They provide state-of-the art theory and training for Guard personnel and first responders, such as police, firefighters and emergency management personnel.

Nash Community College

Emergency Preparedness Technology

The curriculum is designed to provided students with a foundation of technical and professional knowledge needed for emergency services delivery in local and state government agencies. Study involves both management and technical aspects of law enforcement, fire protection, emergency medical services, and emergency planning. Students will learn technical and administrative skills such as investigative principles, hazardous materials, codes, standards, emergency agency operations, and finance. This two-year degree program is designed for a student to work full-time in the public service field and attend school full-time on off duty days.

North Carolina Central University

Homeland Security and Forensics

The University has been awarded a $195,000 grant over a three-year period to develop new concentrations in homeland security and forensics. Dr. Harvey McMurray is the principal investigator (PI) and author of this grant.

University of North Carolina

Community Preparedness & Disaster Management

Community Preparedness and Disaster Management have expanded their programs. They currently offer a certificate program in Disaster Management offered each January and July. The program will also offer a Homeland Security variant that began in April of 2005.

Also in planning stages is a Bachelor of Science in Disaster Management. Going along with the Bachelors in Disaster Management, a Master's degree is also being planned. At the Master's level, students will specialize in one of three areas: Disaster Management, Business Continuity, or Homeland Security.

A graduate from this program will be suited to be a Fire Chief, Police Chief, Supervisor or Department Head in Emergency Management or a leader at FEMA or in the private sector. Though these programs are still being planned, the following two courses have been announced for the growing program: Terrorism and Community Preparedness and The Military and the Homeland- Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.

B.A. in Emergency Management

B.A. in Emergency Management is both a profession and a field of study addressing the five stages of disaster management: prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery. The field covers natural and technological disasters, as well as issues of homeland security. The mission of the major is to create a cadre of graduates with extensive theoretical and applied knowledge in emergency management and disaster research.

CSCC offers numerous short courses relating to Homeland Security Training. The courses deal with everything ranging from Terrorism Planning, Incident Command, Debris Management, and Weapons of Mass Destruction courses pertaining to suicide bombers, biological weapons (anthrax), nuclear, radiological, and chemical (sarin) weapons.

Lakeland Community College, Kirtland, Ohio

Emergency Management Planning and Administration

A.S. degree program & certificate program in Emergency Management Planning and Administration. The program goal is to provide emergency management personnel and volunteer emergency management team members with the skills to respond to and recover from large-scale emergencies. The program also prepares entry-level students to become effective in the field of emergency management.

Emphasis is placed on how the emergency management system is applied to all hazards, across all four phases of emergencies, and among all functions of integrated emergency management. The four phases of emergency management are mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Classes such as Emergency Management Administration, Mitigation for Emergency Managers and Disaster Response and Recovery help students to expand their knowledge, skills and abilities for professional and career development in this critical field.

FEMA, the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the Lake County , Ashtabula County and Gauge County Departments of Emergency Services, and the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the American Red Cross endorse this program.

Emergency Management Planning and Administration

Lakeland Community College is offering a certificate in Emergency Management Planning and Administration. In response to the increase in natural disasters, terrorist incidents and other major emergencies the program is designed to address the four major umbrella areas of emergency management, which are mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery.

Security and Intelligence

Security and Intelligence Focus: Terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, intelligence. The interdisciplinary major includes courses on terror and terrorism, development and control of weapons of mass destruction, food security and globalization, code making and code breaking, and international security.

Housed in the Undergraduate International Studies Program in the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences, the major comprises courses from approximately 14 colleges and academic departments. In addition, the major requires students to learn a foreign language.

The major will continue expanding its course offerings. Courses are now being developed on the economics of war, environmental security, language and computers, rebuilding failed states, and terrorism and violence.

Owens Community College

The University of Findlay, Center for Terrorism Preparedness is offering Terrorism Preparedness Training Courses. The purpose is to develop integrated training programs that will assist communities in the prevention of, preparation for, response to, and recovery from possible terrorist incidents and comparable natural disasters.

The training is designed for emergency preparedness needs of corporate safety and security personnel, firefighters, emergency medical and law enforcement personnel, the medical community, school personnel, and the maritime and transportation industry.
