PowerPoint Presentations for Beginners
This document introduces you to the industry-standard presentation software, PowerPoint 2000. Within this program are all the tools you need to give state-of-the-art presentations. This tutorial is designed to quickly get new users of PowerPoint 2000 up and running. PowerPoint 2000 also includes tools for programming, Web design, collaboration and animation, which will be touched on in the "PowerPoint Presentations: Getting Fancy" tutorial.

  You will need:
  • PowerPoint 2000 (If you are working from your Pierce College office computer and have Outlook, you probably also have this version of PowerPoint)

3 Ways to Open PowerPoint
Starting From Programs
 

Click the Windows Start Bar. Scroll up to Programs. Another
menu window opens to your right. Scroll to the icon
labeled "Microsoft Office 2000" and click on Microsoft Powerpoint.

 
Using the Office Toolbar
 

If you have installed PowerPoint as part of Microsoft Office,
the Office toolbar is part of your Windows desktop. Scroll
over the icons slowly. Screen tips appear naming each
program. Click the PowerPoint icon.

Start with Desktop Shortcut

 

Many times the install program will place a shortcut on
your desktop or you can create one. Click the desktop icon
to start PowerPoint.

Launching PowerPoint
Navigate the first screen
 

When you first open PowerPoint, the first screen presents four choices. Click Ok to accept blank presentation.

Choose a Slide Layout
 

PowerPoint opens with many slide-layout templates from
which to choose. Start working with the default
AutoLayout slide. Click Ok.

Adding a Title
 

Click on the words "Click to add title" and key in your title.

View it as a slide
 

Click on the Slide Show view button in the lower left hand corner. You will see how your page will look if you are presenting it as a slide show.

note- to get out of this view either press the ESC key on your keyboard, or click your mouse a few times.

Save it!
  Go to File > Save, and save it to your disk or hard drive.

 

Congratulations, you have just opened PowerPoint and created your first slide!
