Hardcopy to Digital: Getting Images Onto the Web

Scanning (in Lava Java Ft.Steilacoom)

Java 7 (Windows)

1. Be sure the scanner is on (if not-turn it on and restart the computer)
2. Put your photograph face down on the scanner
3. Open Photoshop (Start/Programs/Adobe/Photoshop 6.0/Adobe Photoshop 6.0)
4. Go to File/Import/Epson Twain
5. Set the settings as follows:


6. Drag a box around the part of the image you want scanned
7. Click Scan
8. Close the Epson program

 

Java 2 (Mac)

  1. Open the Harddrive (G005890)
  2. Go to Applications/Adobe Photoshop 6.0/Adobe Photoshop 6.0
  3. File/Import/DeskScannII (it automatically prescans when you open it)
  4. Be sure the settings are for: TYPE: Sharp Millions of Colors; and PATH: Screen
  5. Adjust the cropping or "marching ants" to be 'marching' around the part of the image you want scanned.
  6. Click Final

 

Cropping

  1. Click on the crop tool in the toolbar at the left of the screen
  2. Click/hold/and drag the cursor from the upper left of the image to the bottom right.

    Rotate

    1. Put your cursor on the lower right corner of the box around your picture until it turns into a double arrow.
    2. Click/Hold/and pull down which will make your box bigger, giving grayspace around the image.
    3. Drag your crop tool around the image.
    4. Put your cursor in the gray area outside of the image. (Notice it turns into a curved double-arrow)
    5. Click/Hold/Drag and notice how your crop selection rotates.
    6. Adjust the crop marks
    7. Press the Enter Key on your keyboard to crop.

     

Resizing

    1. In Photoshop go to Image/Image Size
    2. Be sure that the 'Constrain Proportions' box is checked.
    3. Adjust either the pixel dimensions (if you know what you want) or the Document Size.
      1. I recommend that if you want the image to go out via email or on the Web, then don't go over 5" for the width or height
    4. Set your resolution for 72 pixels per inch
    5. Try sharpening the image by going to Filter/Sharpen/Sharpen
      1. If it doesn't look better doing this, go to Edit/Undo Sharpen

       

Save for the Web

    1. Go to File/Save for Web
    2. Click on the upper right version of the picture
    3. In 'Settings' choose JPEG Medium (this is just a starting point, you can vary this as desired.)
    4. Click OK
    5. Save to the location of your choice
