- Creating Simple Web Pages

Make a Homepage
A Homepage is the first page your viewers go to on your website. It is usually a welcome and table of contents page. You can say something about yourself or your classes on this page and provide links to specific courses, syllabii, assignments, etc.

Create a New Page

Go to File / New and create a blank document.

Type in some basic information about you or your course. Format it, choose the font and font sizes.

Don't get too wordy. Keep it simple and easy to read.

Create Links

Type in some words that will link to other pages of information. My example above is "Workshops" and "Tutorials".

Highlight one of the words to be linked.

On your menubar go to Insert / Hyperlink

At the Insert Hyperlink dialogue box click File and choose the web page you want to link to.

When you look back at your linked word it should now be blue.

Save it as a Web Page

At your menubar click on File / Save As. Click the little arrow on the "Save as type" box. Choose Web Page from the list. Save it to your new web folder and call it "home".

Test it

To find out if it works, open up your web browser, ie: Netscape or Internet Explorer.

On the menubar click on File/Open and open up your homepage document that you just created. Click on the links and it should take you to the other pages you assigned.

Congratulations! You have created a Website!

Right now however it resides on your hardrive or disk so you are the only person who can see it. The next step is to put it on a web server so anyone can access it from the Web.

You can learn this by going to the Uploading to the Web tutorial.
