What are Electronic Reserves?
Pierce College Library's Electronic Reserves allows you to place course related material on the World Wide Web making it accessible 24 hours a day (well, almost). Students may then access material from home, computer labs, the library or anywhere there is an Internet connection. Students easily access these items through the online Library Catalog where they are organized by instructor and by course. Faculty provide students with a library-issued password, ensuring that only enrolled students gain access.
Where can I see an example of an instructor's electronic reserves?
To see E-Reserves in action, let's use Mary (not Sharon) Russell's Anthropology 240 (Women in Cross Cultural Perspectives).
It's a good idea to open a new browser window or print this page so you can refer back to these instructions.
1. From the Library's homepage at www.pierce.ctc.edu/library, choose "Library Catalog". (and click on the green "Local Catalog" button)
2. In the searching box, the third tab (purple) says "Course Reserves". Click on that.
3. Now you can select an instructor, department or course (you do not have to use all three).
Select "Russell, Mary" from the instructor list and click on the "Search" button (lower right).
4. Now you are looking at reserves Mary has at the library for her three anthropology courses (you could have also indicated "ANTHR240: Women in Cross Cultural Perspectives" at the Course box to get only her 240 reserves).
5. From that list, choose "*Electronic Reserve for ANTHROPOLOGY 240(FS)Russell". Now you are looking at the list of 3 articles on electronic reserve.
6. Choose any of these articles for viewing. You will need to input the password, 0919 which was the first day of this quarter. These passwords will change every quarter so will need to update your syllabus or other method of letting the students know the password.
7. After entering the password, Adobe Acrobat will launch and open that file.
Adobe Acrobat must be on the user's computer for this work.
Adobe can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html for FREE.
8. You did it!
