Safety and Security Awareness
As part of a series of programs offered by the college, personal safety and first aid classes are conducted periodically. Information on safety and security is provided to students and employees on a regular basis through The Pioneer (Fort Steilacoom student news paper), The Puyallup Post (Puyallup student news paper), The Pen (employee electronic news letter), and student and employee email systems.
Crime statistics for the three previous years are published annually. Students will find additional information in the college catalog and the student handbook. More information for faculty and staff is found in their employee handbooks, and during new employee orientations.
Personal property theft can take place at home, school, work, and from vehicles. Thefts on campus often occur during normal business hours, when no one thinks twice about a stranger in an area. If challenged, the stranger will likely offer a plausible excuse.
Personal Property Theft Prevention
- Keep your purse, wallet or other valuable items with you at all times, or locked in a drawer, closet, or locker.
- Lock your office or area when it is not attended.
- Do not place keys to offices, desks or file cabinets for general use in unsecured locations.
- Check the identity of strangers who are in your work area. Ask them what or who they are looking for so that you can assist them. If this makes you uncomfortable, contact Campus Safety about your suspicion.
Vehicle Prowl and Theft Prevention
- Do not leave valuables in plain sight to include: gifts, movie videos, music CD's, cell phones, purses... etc.
- Never leave your keys in your car.
- Always lock your doors.
- Park in well-lighted areas.
- Never leave the motor running in your driveway or when your car is unattended.
- Completely close all car windows.
Alert Campus Safety of all suspicious persons on campus
- Report any crimes in progress to 911 first and then to Campus Safety.
- Be prepared to report a physical description of the person. Example: white male, 30 years old, 6' tall, short red hair, wearing blue jeans, red shirt, carrying a black jacket.
