Brian Purugganan has been selected as the new head coach for the Pierce College Womens Basketball program. Purugganan comes to Pierce following nine successful seasons as the head coach for the varsity girls team at Foss High School, where he lead the Falcons to two State tournament appearances, and six West Central District Tournament appearances. The Falcons were the Narrows Bridge Division Champions in 2007-08, and Purugganan was selected as the Narrows League Coach of the Year in 2004.
Prior to his time at Foss, Purugganan was the head coach at Clover Park High School for five years (1995-2000), and at Christian Faith High School for five years (1990-1995).
Purugganan has coached with a number of AAU teams in Seattle and Tacoma, has run clinics for the Boys & Girls Club in Tacoma, and has run team camps for high school girls varsity programs. His teams have attended the NBC Camps for sixteen of the past nineteen years.
Coach Purugganan is excited about the opportunity to coach at the college level. “I consider it an honor and a privilege to be working at a level where I can be part of molding and shaping young women and preparing them for the future. I look forward to the challenge of building a winning tradition with the Raiders basketball program.”
A Tacoma area resident for the past 27 years, Purugganan was born in California, attended high school in Alaska, and went to college in Hawaii. He attended Hawaii Community College-Hilo for one year, and was a member of the state title team. Purugganan then transferred to Hawaii Pacific College, where he played basketball for three years, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science in 1982.
“We feel very fortunate to have someone of Brians caliber and experience join our staff, and are looking forward to getting the Raiders Womens Basketball program back on the map in the NWAACC,” said Duncan Stevenson, Pierce College Athletic Director. “Brian will bring a new energy, a positive attitude, and a desire to succeed to the program.”

Despite missing 7 games in mid-season, sophomore point guard Scott Halasz has been named to the Western Division Mens Basketball All-Stars Second Team. Halasz led the Raiders in scoring average at 15 points per game, shooting 48 percent from the field, and finishing second in assists and third in steals on the team. The loss of Halasz during the heart of the Raiders league schedule, due to a broken hand, was one of the key reasons the Raiders missed out on a return trip to the NWAACC Tournament. Halasz finishes his two years with the Raiders with a ten point per game scoring average. Halasz will participate in the NWAACC Sophomore All-Star game on March 9, at Bellevue Community College.
Freshman post Courtnie Martin was named to the Western Division Womens Basketball All-Stars as an Honorable Mention selection. Martin had an outstanding first year with the Raiders, finishing as the teams leading scorer, averaging 16.4 points per game, and second leading rebounder, grabbing 7.6 boards per contest.
