The new Pierce College Raider Men's Basketball program took another step on Wednesday night (Jan. 30) beating conference foe Green River Community College 88-66 at home. The Raider defense led the way, holding GRCC to only 28 first-half points.
Tyler Zornes led the Raiders in scoring with 19 points and six assists. Donnie Woods chipped in with 16 points, four assists and three rebounds. Gerren Farrison came off the bench to 13 points and six rebounds. Point guard Darius Vaielua scored a career high nine assists. Pierce was outrebounded 44-32, but forced Green River into 25 turnovers and the active zone shut down Green River from the three-point line, shooting only two for 20.
Next up, the Raiders (10-10, 3-5) play host to arch NWAACC rival and number-one ranked Tacoma Community College at the Lakewood Community Center at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002. Jeff Estis, in his first year at Pierce, has the Raiders poised for their first playoff appearance since 1990. Raider basketball history has seen only four post-season bids in its 35-year history. The Raiders, currently in sixth place, trail Clark and Highline (4-4) and South Puget Sound (5-3) after the first round of conference play. TCC leads the way at 8-0 and Lower Columbia is second at 6-2.

Raiders lose to Lower Columbia's men and women on the road
$thisCategory = "Winter Sports"?> Lower Columbia was unkind to the Pierce College Raiders on Saturday. The men's team handled Pierce an 83-75 loss and the LCC women controlled the game, winning 61-33.

Clark College sweeps Raiders; Men lose 96-87, Women 72-63
$thisCategory = "Winter Sports"?> Clark College of Vancouver, Wash., disposed of both Pierce College basketball teams on Wednesday night (Jan. 23). The tough trip down I-5 was unkind to the men's team that falls to 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the league. The women's team valiantly fought, but came up nine points short. The Raider Women are still looking for their first conference win.
Pierce was led by Erika Lastimado (21 points) and Ashley German (13 points). The Raiders battled all night, keeping the game close. Coach Quarles and the ladies return to action at 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) vs Lower Columbia College in Longview.
The men's team did not fare much better. Missing 15 free throws and losing 54-40 in rebounds, Pierce was unable to overcome a slow start, trailing 44-36 at the half. Terrence Troupe and Demetrius Crosby each added 17 and Darius Vaielua scored 16 points and had seven assists. The Raiders continue to improve with turnovers, only having nine in this game.
