AND 1 National High School Championship regional: Mount Tahoma wins!

Tournament Final

Final game: Mount Tahoma 65 vs Rainier Beach High School 50

Mount Tahoma's boys' basketball team, under the leadership of Coach Owen Chambers along with standouts Tyrell Curry and Baree Ward ,defeated northwest powerhouse Rainier Beach in the finals of the 2002 AND 1 National High School Basketball Championship sponsored by Pierce College in Lakewood. The Thunderbirds earn a trip to Philadelphia to play in the Final Eight of the National Summer Basketball Championship July 13 and 14. The games will be broadcast live on Fox Sports television from The Palestra.

Ranier Beach cut the game to three late, but was unable to stop Curry who finished the game with five spectacular dunks. Curry had 21 points, Julio Feliciano 18 points and Ward added 14 points. Josh Love scored 17 points to lead the way for Ranier Beach and Coach Mike Bethea.

The championship was heard live on1180 AM KLAY Radio with Scott Overbo, John Kiley and Pierce College Coach Jeff N. Estis. Curry was named 1180 KLAY MVP.

Steilacoom, 51 vs Decatur, 49
Decatur was led by senior forward Brandon Hicks and senior guard Steven Patenaude in a missed shot at the buzzer to lose to Steilacoom, making for two consecutive upsets, the first against Mercer Island. Steilacoom was led by Ryan Reynolds and Brett Wusterbarth, both three-year starters for the Sentinels.

Mount Tahoma, 64 vs Hillsborough (Ore.) 59

Hillsborough over came a huge deficit but fell short against Mount Tahoma High School in the quarterfinals. Hillsborough was led by senior guard Tomas Mosqueda and junior guard James Loe. Baree Ward and Tyrell Curry paced the Mount Tahoma Thunderbirds for Coach Owen Chambers.

Rainier Beach, 54 vs Gig Harbor, 51, double overtime
Rainier Beach used double overtime to pull off a great victory over Gig Harbor. The G.H.Tides were led by Bill Forelli and Morgan Axton. Despite an early deficit, Gig Harbor battled through a well-played tournament run.

Jefferson (Ore.), 56 vs Bozeman (Mont.), 42

Jefferson High School held on to defeat an aggressive Bozeman team. Senior forward PJ Owsley and senior guard Nick Dissly led the JHS Hawks all weekend with outstanding play.

Mount Tahoma, 58 vs Steilacoom, 36

Mount Tahoma pulled away with great athleticism to defeat a gritty Steilacoom in the semifinals. Coach Owen Chambers and Mount T Thunderbirds will play for the AND 1 National Championship at 6:15 p.m. vs Ranier Beach High School. Baree Ward of Mount Tahoma was the game's leading scorer.

Rainer Beach, 56 vs Jefferson (Ore.), 51

Ranier Beach defeated Jefferson (Ore.) in a tough match at Lakewood Community Center, putting Rainier Beach in the finals. Jefferson made its run behind senior guard Demarcus Carney and senior forward Jonathan Jackson Coach Mike Bethea will lead his team to the 2002 AND 1 Regional Championship at 6:15 p.m. vs Mount Tahoma High School.

AND 1 National Tournament in Lakewood Friday, Saturday (June 28. 29)

The Friday games in the Pacific Northwest regional tournament for the AND 1 National High School Championship tip off at 1 p.m. at the Lakewood Community Center and 2 p.m. at Lakes High School. It will be two full days of basketball with the best teams in the northwest. Teams participating are from Alaska, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

The winners' brackets will be played on Saturday afternoon at LCC, culminating with the championship game at 6:15 p.m. broadcast live on 1180 AM KLAY Radio. The event is open to the public. For more information call the Pierce College Athletic Office at (253) 964-6613.

Auburn's Riverside wins Pierce's first girls' high school basketball tourney

Pierce College Raider Basketball hosted a successful girls' high school tournament at the Lakewood Community Center June 21 and 22. Riverside High School (Auburn) won over South Kitsap in the finale of the eight-team tournament.

Other teams participating included Curtis, Puyallup, Washington, Eatonville, Spanway Lake and White River. Pierce's head women's coach, Tim Quiroz, ran the tournament. He was appointed head coach this spring. For a complete bio, access the women's basketball page on this site.

The brackets, opponents, sites and game times are set for the northwest region's 2002 AND 1 National High School Tournament at the Lakewood Community Center (LCC) and Lakes High School. The basketball tournament is set to begin at 1 p.m. June 28. For directions or details call (253) 964-6613 or access the latest on the Raider Athletics Web page. LCC is located at 9112 Lakewood Drive SW, just south of the intersection with Steilacoom Boulevard. Lakes High School is located at 10320 Farwest Drive SW, approximately one mile from Pierce College Fort Steilacoom.

Raiders to host AND 1 National High School Tournament

Pierce College Men's Basketball is hosting a 25-team bracket of high school basketball teams for the AND 1 National High School Tournament June 28-29. The winning team will have an all-expense-paid trip to Philadelphia for the championship rounds July 13-14 broadcast by Fox Sports.

The championship game will be broadcast live on KLAY Radio 1180 AM at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 29. Bob McCluskey, station manager, said, "We are proud to be carrying the live call of the classic matchup."

"We are excited about hosting the tournament. With the recruiting changes taking place in college basketball, this national tournament will become the premier summer event in the country," said Head Coach Jeff N. Estis. " The presence of this event at Pierce shows the continued improvements being made in Lakewood," added Estis.

Play will be at Pierce College's home court at the Lakewood Community Center and Lakes High School in Lakewood. A schedule will be available on the Pierce College Web site.

High School Summer Basketball Tournament June 28-29
