Raider Men extend win streak to three

January 31, 2004 @ 8:08 am

The Raiders appear to be returning to their early season form, as they passed the midway point of league play, picking up a key win over crosstown rival Tacoma, and knocking off league leading Centralia.

On Wednesday night, Pierce took care of business early in a win over Grays Harbor, 91-68. The Raiders displayed another balanced offensive attack with 5 players scoring in double figures. Clem Benton and Devon Connor-Green led the way for Pierce with two outstanding all-around efforts. Connor-Green put in 16 points, collected 6 rebounds, along with 5 assists and 4 steals, while Benton had 15 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. The win improved the team's record to an even 5-5 in league play, 12-7 overall.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, the Raiders pulled off a mild upset by defeating division leading Centralia, on the road, 71-70. Pierce was led by Jacob Mitchell's 18 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Benton (15), Tremaine Curry (14), and Connor-Green and Ryan Reynolds (each with 10). With only 4.3 seconds remaining in the game, and the score tied at 69, the Trailblazers Sean Russell made the front end of a one-and-one situation, putting the home team up by one. Russell missed his second attempt, and Jacob Mitchell scooped up the rebound and fired a bullet pass to Tremaine Curry who drove the length of the court and scored the winning basket on a layin at the buzzer.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, Pierce traveled crosstown to take on the Titans of TCC. In their most exciting game of the season, the Raiders scored a heart-stopping 92-90 victory in overtime. Pierce was able to overcome an incredible rebounding advantage by Tacoma (73-42), with another balanced scoring effort; led by Clem Benton's 20 points, Tremaine Curry (18), Anthony Calogero (14), and Brandon Hamilton and Ryan Reynolds (each with 12).

Pierce travels to Highline CC this Saturday in hopes of taking one step closer to the playoffs. Game time is at 3:00 p.m.

Raider Men suffer back-to-back disappointing losses

January 11, 2004 @ 8:52 pm

As a result of last week's inclement weather, the Raiders were forced to play back-to-back games this weekend, and found themselves on the short end on both nights. Pierce hosted the Clippers of SPSCC on Friday night, and took a commanding lead into the lockerroom at halftime, 33-16. Unfortunately, the Raiders came out flat to start the second half and let the Clippers back into the game, and eventually lost, 67-62. Pierce was led by another outstanding effort by freshman Jacob Mitchell, with 16 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Devon Connor-Green's 12 points, and Deandre Bennett's 10. The Raiders shot a miserable 1-15 from 3-point range.
On Saturday, the Raiders went on the road to Green River CC and lost a tough one, 94-77. The Raiders had four players in double figures, led by Anthony Calogero (18), Tremaine Curry (15, 10 rebounds, 8 assists), Jacob Mitchell (11, 9 rebounds), and Clem Benton (10 points). The losses drops the Raiders to 2-3 in Western Division play, and 9-5 overall.
The Raiders hope to return to their winning ways on Monday, as they travel to Clark for a game against the Pengiuns. Pierce returns home on Wednesday as the Red Devils from LCC come to town. Game time is at 8:00 p.m., and can be heard by tuning in to radio KLAY 1180 AM.
