Raiders sweep Clark at home
February 8, 2004 @ 9:08 pm
For the second time in ten days, the Raider Women and Men pulled off a doubleheader victory on their home court, against the visiting Penguins from Clark College, on Saturday, February 7. Both Pierce teams made up for losses just one month ago against the same Penguin teams in Vancouver.
The Women took control of the game early and never looked back, as they picked up their third league victory, 70-45, their most wins since the 2000-2001 season. Vanessa Caskey led the way for the Raiders with 20 points and 7 steals, followed by Jessica Riippi with 14 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds. Tiffany Stewart had another outstanding game on the boards, finishing with 13 rebounds. Pierce's pressure defense forced the visitors to commit 39 turnovers. The Raiders had an excellent night shooting the long ball, as they converted 7 of 17 attempts from beyond the 3-point mark. The win improved the Raiders' record to 3-10, 5-16.
The Men had a much tougher time with Penguins, but managed to pull off an exciting one point victory, 78-77, and extend their current win streak to 5 games. The win improves the Raiders' record to 7-5 (14-7 overall), and a share of 4th place in the West. In a hard-fought defensive battle, that saw sixteen lead changes during the game, Pierce's Devon Connor-Green grabbed his own missed shot and put in the winning basket with 3 seconds remaining in the contest. The Raiders had five players score in double figures, led by Tremaine Curry's 15 (and 11 rebounds), Clem Benton's 13, and 11 each from Connor-Green, Ryan Reynolds, and Jacob Mitchell.
Pierce will be at home again on Wednesday (Feb. 11), as they play host to the Gators of Green River CC. Play begins with the Women at 6:00 p.m., and the Men at 8:00 p.m. Catch all of the action on KLAY 1180 AM.
