Raider Baseball sweeps Shoreline in pre-season opener

March 16, 2004 @ 2:45 pm

The Raiders, under first year head coach Jason Picinich, used clutch hitting and quality early season pitching performances to take two games at home against the Dolphins of Shoreline C.C.

In the first game, Tyler Roberts came up big with a one out, game winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Vince Maughan, to capture a 5-4 victory for Pierce. Doug Nyman (1-0) picked up his first victory in relief pitching two solid shutout innings. The Raiders' starting pitcher, Justin Liogghio, worked 5 strong innings, giving up all four Dolphin runs.

In game two, both teams relied on strong pitching to keep the game scoreless through seven innings, before the Raiders finally broke through with two runs in the bottom of the 8th, going on to a 2-0 victory. Pierce's starter, Drew Thompson, threw a masterful 7 1/3 shutout innings, giving up only 6 hits. Brad Allcock (1-0) came on to relieve Thompson, and pick up the victory, to complete the team's first shutout of the season. The Raiders were led by Ryan Johannes' 2-4 day from the plate, including a double.

The Raiders (2-0), travel to Ontario, Oregon this weekend to take part in the Gentry Ford Classic Tournament, hosted by Treasure Valley C.C.
