Raiders' Top Scorer Returns To Coach Women's Hoops

August 17, 2004 @ 7:06 pm

Raiders star Ann Bowen, the team's all-time leading scorer in basketball, is returning to Pierce College Fort Steilacoom as the new women’s basketball coach.

"I want to turn the program around," she said. "I want to get players who are committed and dedicated to college basketball – true student athletes for whom school is first and sports is second."

Bowen played for the Raiders from 1987 until her graduation from Pierce in 1989 then went on to play for Central Washington University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1991. Bowen served as an assistant coach for Pierce this past season, and also from 1993-1996. As Pierce College's all-time leading career scorer for both women and men, she had a two-year average of 20.4 points per game and led the conference in scoring as a sophomore with an average 23.2 points per game.

"We are very excited to have Ann as the new head coach of the Raiders Women's Basketball team," said Duncan Stevenson, district director of athletics.

"Her previous experiences as a player and assistant coach at Pierce give her a great understanding of our program and its history. We believe that she will do an outstanding job of building a solid foundation for the program as we prepare to move into our new gymnasium facilities in two years."
