Raiders Softball — BEST IN THE WEST!!
May 16, 2007 @ 9:38 am
Ending a 25 year drought, the Raiders Softball team clinched the Western Division title on Friday, with a doubleheader sweep of Centralia CC; 11-0 and 10-2. The 2007 Raiders collected 26 league wins and 36 wins overall – both school records. Pierce goes into the NWAACC conference tournament as the #1 seed from the West, and will face Chemeketa CC (Salem, OR) in their first round game this Friday at East Delta Park in Portland.
The division title marks the first time since 1982 that the Raiders finished the regular season at the top of the standings. The 1982 Raiders went on to win the NWAACC tournament, one of three conference championships in the history of Pierce College Athletics. This years team hopes for the same results in Portland this weekend.
In addition to setting team records for most wins in a season, the Raiders also set the team mark for home runs in a season, with 62. Sophomore standout, Jievielyn Howard, set the single season home run record with 18, and teammate Kayla Jayne set the career mark for total hits with 142 in her 2 years in a Raider uniform. Both players have signed national letters of intent to attend William Penn University (IA) next year.
In what is sure to be a post season full of individual accolades, the awards began with sophomores Jazmin Mercado and Sarah Pruitt named to the 2007 NWAACC All Academic Sports Team, for their academic performance the past two years. Regional all-stars will be announced at the NWAACC tournament banquet in Portland on Thursday evening.
Congratulations to Coach Chris DeMiero, the members of the coaching staff, and most importantly, the young women of Raiders Softball, for their outstanding record-breaking season.
Good luck at NWAACCs!!
