Raider Womens Basketball signees for 2008-09

The Pierce College Athletics Department is pleased to announce one of the most successful recruiting classes for the Womens Basketball program in the last 15 years. Raider Softball dominates All-Star selections

The NWAACC announced this years regional Softball All-Star teams at the annual Championship Tournament Awards Banquet on Thursday evening in Portland. On the heels of their second consecutive division title and near-perfect 28-2 league record, the Raiders dominated the Western Region All-Star teams. Sophomore standout Kristi Alcorn was selected as the Wests Most Valuable Player. Alcorn led the Raiders in nearly every offensive category while anchoring third base for the Raiders. Alcorns selection marks the 3rd consecutive year that a Raider has captured MVP honors (Kayla Jayne – 2007, Yukari Kuranuki – 2006). Freshman Kimmie Cable was selected as the Wests Most Outstanding Pitcher. Cable led the Raiders with 18 victories this year, and also finished with the teams second highest batting average. The Raiders placed five players on the West Regions First Team All-Stars; sophomores Kelly Smith (OF) and Kelley Suggs (P) were joined by freshmen Kimmie Cable (P/IF), Katie Demme (OF), and Krista Zappone (OF/IF). Freshmen Keilani Cruz (SS) and Ellen Mittlestadt (C/OF) were selected as Second Team All-Stars. This marks the third consecutive year that the Raiders have had at least 4 players selected as First Team All-Stars, and the second straight year a Raiders has been chosen the regions Most Outstanding Pitcher. First year head coach, Mark Edmonston, was selected by his peers as the Coach Of The Year in the West.
Centerfielder Kelly Smith was honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as the winner of the adidas Golden Shoe Award. The award recognizes the NWAACCs leading base stealer. Smith set the school record with 34 stolen bases this season, while leading the conference.

Raider Baseball makes playoffs!!

The Raider Baseball team swept a crucial doubleheader against Green River on Saturday to capture 3rd place in the Western Division, and earn their first trip to the playoffs since 1982. The 26 year postseason drought came to an end after 20 innings of outstanding baseball against the Gators on Saturday.
The first game of the twinbill featured outstanding pitching performances by both teams, that ended with the Raiders scoring the first and only run of the game in the bottom of the 11th inning, taking a 1-0 victory. Pierces Nick Hutson threw 7 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 8. Jer Atkinson took over for Hutson in the 8th, and Ryan King came on in the middle of the 9th. Both pitchers kept the Gators scoreless going into the 11th inning. Raiders closer Austin Giglio took the ball in the 11th and continued to keep Green Rivers bats silenced. The Raiders offense only managed 3 hits in the game, none more important than Kody Gibsons single to get things started in the bottom of the 11th. Gibson stole second, which resulted in Keola Rubin being issued an intentional walk. Garrett Cochran was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases. With Josh Serrick at bat, the Gators pitcher threw a wild pitch, scoring Gibson with the winning run. Giglio picked up the win in relief for the Raiders.
Game 2 of the day saw more offense and another close game, as the Raiders took the contest 5-4. The win secured 3rd Place in the West for the Raiders, and a spot in the playoffs. Bobby Wassman pitched a solid 8 innings for Pierce, picking up the win. Darryl Morrow came on in the 9th to close things out and pick up the save. The Raiders used timely hitting in the 3rd and 4th innings to produce all 5 of their runs. Keola Rubin had a 2-RBI triple in the 3rd, and Chase Doughty cracked an RBI double in the 4th that proved to be the game winning run.
The Raiders finished league play with a 13-12 record, good for 3rd in the West, and the programs first winning record since the 1992 season. The Raiders will take on Tacoma CC in a best 2-of-3 series this weekend for the Wests #2 seed to the NWAACC Tournament.

Raiders Baseball one step closer to playoffs

The Raiders Baseball team took sole possession of third place in the Western Division with a win over Green River on Wednesday. The win put the Raiders one game up on the Gators, and one step closer to a playoff berth for the first time since 1980. The Raiders host Green River for a doubleheader on Saturday, and close out the regular season with two games at Tacoma on Sunday. Pierce needs to win 3 or their final 4 games to guarantee a trip to the postseason. Second year head coach Orion Jones feels confident that his team is peaking at the right time, and have a great shot at the programs first NWAACC Tournament appearance since the eruption of Mount Saint Helens.

Raiders Softball — BEST IN THE WEST — Again!!

The Raiders Softball team clinched their second consecutive Western Division Title on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of division rival South Puget Sound. In the first game of the day the Raiders came back from a 6-0 deficit to capture the win with a walk-off 2-run home run by Krista Zappone. Final score was 8-6. Katie Demme added a solo shot in the Raiders come from behind victory. Kelley Suggs picked up her 16th win of the season, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 4.
Game 2 featured a stellar pitching performance by freshman sensation Kimmie Cable, as the Raiders won 2-0. Cable shut out the Clippers on just two hits over 7 innings, and recorded 4 strike outs. Cable helped out her own cause at the plate with an RBI double in the 5th inning, scoring the first run of the game. The Raiders tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th.
The two victories extends the Raiders record to 26-2, equalling the most league wins in the programs history. The Raiders look to break that mark on Friday when they close our the regular season schedule at Centralia.
The Division Championship is just the third title in the programs history, the first coming in 1982 when the Raiders also won the NWAACC Championship. The Raiders go into this years NWAACC Tournament as the #1 seed from the West, and will play their first round game on Friday, May 16, at 11:30 am, at Delta Park in Portland. The Raiders will play the #4 team from the North, either Everett or Shoreline.
