Raiders Softball sweeps post season awards

June 5, 2007 @ 12:00 am

In recognition of their outstanding season, the Raiders Softball team dominated the post season awards announced at the NWAACC Tournament. Raiders Softball — BEST IN THE WEST!!

May 16, 2007 @ 4:00 pm

Ending a 25 year drought, the Raiders Softball team clinched the Western Division title on Friday, with a doubleheader sweep of Centralia CC; 11-0 and 10-2. The 2007 Raiders collected 26 league wins and 36 wins overall - both school records. Pierce goes into the NWAACC conference tournament as the #1 seed from the West, and will face Chemeketa CC (Salem, OR) in their first round game this Friday at East Delta Park in Portland.
The division title marks the first time since 1982 that the Raiders finished the regular season at the top of the standings. The 1982 Raiders went on to win the NWAACC tournament, one of three conference championships in the history of Pierce College Athletics. This years team hopes for the same results in Portland this weekend.
In addition to setting team records for most wins in a season, the Raiders also set the team mark for home runs in a season, with 62. Sophomore standout, Jievielyn Howard, set the single season home run record with 18, and teammate Kayla Jayne set the career mark for total hits with 142 in her 2 years in a Raider uniform. Both players have signed national letters of intent to attend William Penn University (IA) next year.
In what is sure to be a post season full of individual accolades, the awards began with sophomores Jazmin Mercado and Sarah Pruitt named to the 2007 NWAACC All Academic Sports Team, for their academic performance the past two years. Regional all-stars will be announced at the NWAACC tournament banquet in Portland on Thursday evening.
Congratulations to Coach Chris DeMiero, the members of the coaching staff, and most importantly, the young women of Raiders Softball, for their outstanding record-breaking season.
Good luck at NWAACCs!!

Raider Softball moves closer to West Division Title

May 9, 2007 @ 3:00 pm

With a sweep of 3rd place Highline on Tuesday night, the Raiders moved one step closer to their first division title since 1982. The Raiders jumped on the Thunderbirds early and often, taking the first game 13-1, and closed out the day with a 7-3 victory.
The Raiders continued on their record-setting pace as they picked up their 31st and 32nd wins of the season. Sarah Curleys homerun in the second game gave the Raiders their 58th home run of the season, breaking the teams record set last season. Teammate Jievielyn Howard set the individual season home run record over this past weekend against South Puget Sound, when she belted her 18th of the season.
The Raiders close out the regular season this Friday at home, when they host Centralia at 4 p.m., at Cirque Park. One win against the Trailblazers will give the Raiders their first division title in 25 years — the same year the Raiders won the NWAACC Championship.

Raiders Take Over First Place in the West

April 18, 2007 @ 5:00 pm

Entering yesterdays doubleheader with South Puget Sound CC, the Raiders Softball team found themselves in a tie for first place in the Western Division with their rivals from down the road in Olympia.
However, the Raiders quickly dispatched the Clippers, 8-5 and 9-1, to capture sole possession of first place, with a 10-2 record in league play. The Raiders line-up features a balance of great hitting, speed on the bases, power out of the park, and some really good pitching. For you baseball fans out there that enjoy following Ichiro on his annual quest for a .300 season, make note that six Raiders are currently hitting over .400, led by Tiffany Qualls at an even .500. As a team, the Raiders have a combined .372 batting average. Jievielyn Howard hit her team leading 12th home run yesterday, just three shy of the school record (15).
Tomorrow the Raiders host Centralia CC, starting at 3:00 p.m., at Cirque Park (in U.P.). If you havent had a chance to watch these young women play, you wont want to miss it.
