Storage and Disk Maintenance

Storage

§         Digital Video files are Storage Hungry Critters

§         Need speed – a minimum transfer rate of 7 or 8 megabytes per second.

§         Space – DV requires 3.6 MB of storage space per second

·        That’s 216 MB per minute

·        That’s 1 GB per 5 min.

·        Rule of thumb- Multiply the length of your project video by 4 (for extra footage, undos, scratch copies rendering files, etc)

·        Dedicated Drive – highly recommended.  Improves the performance because don’t have to share with OS, other applications or files that can fragment your disk.

·        Highly recommend getting an external drive. – Can swap projects quickly on your computer

Disk Maintenance

§         Store your project files on your startup disk, and store your media and rendered files on a separate hard disk.

§         Degrament disk drive regularly, especially those used for capturing.

§         When a project is finished and archived, delete all files from the disk you used to create the project.  Degramnet the drive with a disk-optimizing utility.  This helps prepare the disk for the next project.

§         Run Apple’s Disk First Aid utility once or twice a month to check your drive’s data directory.
