PROJECT MANAGMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

This 96-hour non-credit certificate program is comprised of three classes over three quarters – Intro to Project Management (Fall quarter), Project Planning and Scheduling (Winter quarter), Project Execution, Monitoring, Controlling and Closing (Spring quarter). These successive courses are designed to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the basic concepts of project management and “best practice” techniques that make sense in the real world of business and industry. The curriculum is based on the Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). Course requirements: All courses require good writing communication and critical thinking skills.

  • Students must have access to a computer with internet connection and be comfortable using the following applications:
  • Email (must have a valid account and access to the internet)
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Project 2007

Students must purchase two required textbooks which will be used throughout the entire program; A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) 4th edition (available online from the Project Management Institute Marketplace); Introduction to Project Management, Kathy Schwalbe, 3rd edition. INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT (Fall 2009)

Whether you look at project management as an opportunity for career advancement or a way to more effectively complete projects, this course provides the foundation by covering the framework, terminology, concepts and basic tools for project management. PROJECT PLANNING AND SCHEDULING (WINTER 2010)

Prerequisite: Introduction to Project Management. Planning and scheduling are the heart of the “technical” skills of a project manager. This course provides the knowledge; specific tools and techniques to build a project plan, including defining your project scope, cost, schedule and risk. You will learn to use the basic elements of MS Project 2007: enter task, estimate dependencies, constraints, resources, optimization of schedules and updating scheduling. Students will have an opportunity to apply these tools and techniques using the project exercises. Upon completion, students will be able to lead teams in developing project scope and a scope management plan, identify work packages and activities, sequence work activities, estimate the time that work activities will take and develop a schedule.

PROJECT EXECUTION, MONITORING, CONTROLLING AND CLOSING (SPRING 2010)

Prerequisite: Project Planning and Scheduling. This course covers the fundamentals of project execution and the tools and techniques necessary for effective and proactive monitoring, control and performance reporting.  Students learn how to implement quality assurance and quality control and practical techniques for securing contract resources. This session also addresses ways to motivate team members, use team dynamics to achieve success, identify and solve communication problems, and use quality tools to complete your project. Students will learn how to design and implement a well-organized monitoring and control system and how to use the system to measure and report project progress, monitor and control risks, adjust a project plan, exercise change control, and re-baseline a case study project.   You then learn concepts of scope verification to help you secure customer acceptance of project results and successfully close the project.

ESSENTIALS OF HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE

This course is specifically designed for entry-level HR professionals, small business owners, managers responsible for the HR function in their companies, and people looking into HR as a career-change possibility. Knowledge of the basics of HR can improve valuable on-the-job effectiveness, protect your business from needless litigation, and help advance your career.

Offered in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM®), this course covers real-life HR issues, including employment law, selecting qualified employees, compensation, orientation and training, and the employee performance management process. Completing this course will arm you with practical skills you can immediately apply to your own situation. Course is taught by an SPHR certified instructor. AGILE AND LEAN FOR THE OFFICE


This one-day workshop is an introduction to the concepts behind Agile & Lean and how they are different from other business process improvement techniques.  LEAN doesn't require a large capital investment or increased human resources.
