English as a Second Language (ESL) - Home

Pierce College's highly successful, integrated ESL classes are designed to meet the language needs of our immigrant community. Courses include language, writing, mathematics, reading, history and science. Classes meet 8-12 hours per week and are available mornings, afternoons, or evenings. Classes are offered at sites throughout Pierce County and at the Fort Steilacoom or Puyallup campuses.

Pierce College also offers the I-DEA (Integrated Digital English Acceleration) program that uses technology to teach English as a second language. Students improve their English language, technology and career-readiness skills.

The I-DEA program is offered at the Fort Steilacoom and Puyallup campuses.

  • Students in I-DEA Grant classes (days only) receive a loaned laptop computer and a Verizon modem (internet access) and are required to complete 9 hours of online work per week in addition to class time.
  • Students in the I-DEA General classes (morning, afternoon or evening) are not required to complete online work outside of class.

New students need to attend an orientation and be scheduled for state required testing. Students are then enrolled in classes based on their skills assessment results.

Cost: $25 tuition fee per student per quarter. Tuition waivers may be available for eligible students.

Students who are on B-1, B-2, F1, M1, or J1 visas must register for classes through the International Education program.
