Testing Centers - Puyallup and Fort Steilacoom
The Testing Center offers a variety of testing services. The following services and exams are available:
- COMPASS assessment. The COMPASS assessment is used to determine your current skill levels so that you can be placed in the appropriate courses at Pierce College. This test is required for all students who are taking English or math classes, or any classes that have English or math prerequisites.
The COMPASS assessment is not timed, but most students need between two and two and a half hours to complete the test, which includes sections on reading, writing, and math. The assessment may be retaken, however you must wait at least five days between each attempt. Should you choose to retake the COMPASS assessment, you must repay the $15 fee and your new scores will override your previous scores even if they are lower. Students are strongly encouraged to review areas of focus before retaking the COMPASS assessment.
Cost is $15 (non-refundable) and must be paid to the campus cashier prior to starting the assessment. There are no appointments needed; walk-in testing hours are available. Photo identification is required; there are no exceptions. For more information, call Fort Steilacoom Testing Center at 253-964-6521 or Puyallup at 253-840-8343.
Recent high school students may use their high school transcripts to determine initial placement into Pierce College math courses according to the following guidelines. Students are still required to take the COMPASS placement test and may use either measure to determine initial placement.
- All high school math courses used for placement must have been taken within the last two academic years.
- Must have received at least a 'B' (3.0) grade or higher in the last semester of the course they wish to use for placement.
- Must present an unofficial copy of the high school transcript to his/her advisor to provide evidence of successfully completing the prerequisite high school course.
