DSHS Programs

Pierce College offers several specialized programs in collaboration with the state Department of Social and Health Services.

Developmental Disabilities Program

Located at the Rainier School in Buckley and evenings at Puyallup High School, this program offers classes that focus on the skills and information needed to provide support for people with disabilities. This program leads to a technical degree in Developmental Disabilities, which meets the requirements for the position of Adult Training Specialist 2 and 3 with the state.

Special Commitment Center

To assist residents with their treatment and reintegration to the community, Pierce College offers Adult Basic Education, High School Diploma/GED, and Computer Applications programs at the state's Special Commitment Center.

Western State Hospital

For patients, Pierce College offers basic academic and life skills courses. For patients' families, there are classes available to help them understand and support their patient. Pierce also offers Supported Education programs, which are free, non-credit courses in goal setting and career planning, campus orientation and study skills.
