My philosophy on the role of student services in a community college.
Student services play one of the largest roles in the community college system. These services should be committed to the philosophy of multiculturalism and should create mutual opportunities for exchange through cooperative planning and support for all services. In most cases, student services is the first impression of an academic institution for prospective students. It is important to make new students feel welcome during their first contact with the college. It could determine whether or not the student enrolls or chooses another college. Not only is the student’s first experience important, the two years or so a student is enrolled are also important to build student confidence. Students should have confidence in their advisors and that confidence should come from an advisor’s ability to provide accurate planning assistance. Student services should strive to be an example in image, demeanor, character, and communication. An advisor must be motivational and student oriented while encouraging the student’s academic, professional, cultural, and personal development. Each advisor should be able to help students in a timely manner while providing accurate advice. The ultimate goal, no matter how small or large our roles are in a student’s life might be, is to have him or her succeed.
