Tutoring

See the Academic Support Center Web site for information about Adaptive Technology, the Tutoring Center, and the Writers' Center at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom.

Peer Tutoring
The Peer Tutoring program, available at both the Fort Steilacoom and Puyallup campuses, provides free assistance to Pierce College students who need to develop skills for success in their courses. Through individualized attention, tutors help fellow students gain self-confidence and become independent learners, as well as grasp specific subject matter.

You may choose which kind of tutoring assistance you prefer, drop-in or matched one-to-one with a tutor. Drop-in tutoring offers immediate help if you have specific questions in math. You will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.

You may request a tutor or may apply to be a tutor at the New Horizons Learning Center at Fort Steilacoom or the Puyallup Learning Center at Puyallup.

Requirements for tutors

  • Currently enrolled at Pierce College
  • 3.5 average grade in the tutored subject
  • 3.2 cumulative GPA
  • Instructor recommendation
  • Attend a tutoring orientation

Super Tutor
The Super Tutor program is designed to provide supplemental instruction to students in classes with low completion rates or low GPA averages in difficult subject areas. A "super tutor" chosen by the instructor must have taken the course and received an "A" grade. The super tutor is paid to attend the class again and hold three review sessions each week. Students in the class attend these sessions on a voluntary basis; the instructor is not notified of student attendance.
