Computer Installation and Troubleshooting, CIS 150
Textbook: A+ Guide to Hardware, Third Edition, ISBN 0-619-21300-0 Materials: Pen drive, CDs, or Zip and folder for course work.At the completion of this course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Diagram, label and describe the functions of the components inside the system unit
- Describe the features of the motherboard and its key components.
- Assemble and disassemble personal computers.
- Describe and document the boot process.
- Describe how conflicts arise between components inside a personal computer.
- Describe and demonstrate the use of safety precautions when working with PC's
- Describe the various types of RAM and demonstrate its installation.
- Configure various operating systems and device drivers.
- Install and configure hardware components such as motherboards, hard drives, CD-ROMs, drives, cards, pointing devices, printers and other peripherals.
- Access and configure the Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) setup.
- Use available resources to determine PC component information such as hard drive size, amount of RAM, interrupt request, and type of processor.
- Perform advanced preventative maintenance for hard disks and other system components.
- Research and document solutions to error messages or symptoms of a hardware problem.
- Develop a troubleshooting methodology for PC diagnosis and repair.

Classroom behavior: Checking email or playing games during class time is considered disrespectful to the instructor and the student may be asked to leave the classroom.
Tests : Exams may cover all material presented in primary textbook and will have a computer administered portion. Exam format will consist of multiple choice questions similar to quizes
Quizzes:Each student is required to send and reply to email with the instructor. Students who do not presently have an email address/account will establish no cost Email accounts during the class.
Grading: 3.5 – 4 = A (90% and higher), 2.5 – 3.4 = B (80-89%), 1.5 – 2.4 = C (70-79%), 0.7 - 1.4 = D (62-69%)
Class grade weighting :
4 exams (including final) 600 pts
Take home quizzes 100 pts
Report covering PC assembly 100 pts
Homework 200 pts
Total class work 1000 pts.
