International Education - Homestay & Host Family Information

Gaining exposure to a new culture is easy and exciting when families host international students in their homes.

Pierce College is seeking English-speaking hosts for international students this academic year. Most students are college-age but some may be older or younger. Students have basic to advanced English language skills and will be taking classes at Pierce College. They will be looking to their hosts to help them learn about American culture and practice English.

Students pay a $600 monthly reimbursement to host families to cover their expenses.

Host family requirements:

  • The host must provide the student with their own furnished bedroom and meals (several meal options are available).
  • Hosts typically live no farther than a short commute (45 minutes or less) by bus from Pierce College Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood. Travel to campus may include one bus transfer.
  • Family members must also arrange for a home visit and interview, attend an orientation session for new hosts, and pass a background check.

Hosting options:

Hosts can open their homes for weeks or months.

• Short-term Hosts – 4-6 weeks
• Standard Hosts – 3 months to 1 year or more
• Room for Rent – Furnished bedrooms; 3 months to 1 year or more; student buys and cooks own food in the family kitchen ($450/month)
