International Education - Housing

Housing Options

Pierce College has a variety of housing options:

Homestay

Many new international students choose a homestay because it is a great option to experience American culture firsthand. If you choose homestay, you will live with a carefully selected American host family. Hosts provide a private, fully furnished room, three meals a day, and a family atmosphere. There is a minimum one quarter stay to be eligible for homestay. The total cost is $625 per month paid after you move in and directly to your host family each month.

The Housing Office provides a supportive environment in which students are helped and encouraged to develop their skills in leadership, community building, and academic studies. Students under 18 are not eligible to live in the residence hall. Homestay options are available. Please contact George Scheffe, Homestay Manager, at 253-964-6593 or email homestay@pierce.ctc.edu.

Become a Homestay Host Family

Want a global adventure in your own home? Consider hosting a Pierce College international student. Host families provide a critical learning experience for students and, in return, hosts learn about another culture and gain a lasting international connection. Visit the Homestay and Host Family page for detailed information.

Room for Rent (for international students)

If you wish to live independently and prepare your own meals, you can rent a private furnished room in the home of a local family. You will buy your own food, which you can prepare in the family kitchen. You will also have access to bathroom facilities in the home. Single rooms rent for $475 per month.

Apartment

There are many apartments near the Pierce College campus, but we do not make placement arrangements. If you want to live in an apartment, we recommend that you start with a temporary homestay; once you are here, you can then choose your own apartment. Apartments rent for approximately $575 to $1,500 per month, depending on size, number of bedrooms, condition, and so on. In addition, you will be responsible for paying for electricity and heat, and you will pay a security deposit at the time of rental.

Note: Apartments in the U.S. usually come equipped with appliances, such as a stove, refrigerator, and heater, but they do not include furnishings. If you choose to live in an apartment, you should be prepared to buy or rent such things as beds, tables, chairs, telephones, televisions, linens, and kitchen utensils. We recommend apartment living only if you plan to attend Pierce for six months or longer.

Lease and Payment Information

What is a lease?

A lease (contract) is a legal document outlining the terms under which one party agrees to rent property from another party. By signing a lease, one is promising to live in the apartment until the last day of the lease, pay rent on time, and follow all policies and expectations of the office/program/building. The lease also points out many safety issues of renting the space.

How long can I stay?

For the Center for Global Scholars Residence Hall we offer quarter length stays up to a 4 consecutive quarter maximum. You decide the lease length when you apply and indicate your choice on the application. If you wish to break your lease, you must find a non-resident to take the lease/space and bring them to the Housing Office. This person must still meet all criteria for living in the residence hall. A student may be released from their contract due to emergency circumstances at the discretion of the Housing Office and building management with adequate proof of the emergency.

Payments for Quarterly Rent

The entire quarterly housing payment must be paid before you can move into your room.

How to Make Payments

We will be accepting payments for the residence hall as soon as the payment process is released. Please check back or email housing@pierce.ctc.edu for questions.

Be sure to include the student’s full name and student I.D. number (if known) with payment for any transaction.
