Math Courses

Initial placement in the Math sequence depends on placement test scores. The choices and the number of courses a student takes depend upon the field of study and other factors. For more information about initial placement, see a faculty advisor or visit the Testing Center Web page.

Pre-College Level

The Math Course Sequence is:

  • Math 42 Fractions, Decimals and Percents
  • Math 51 Fundamentals of Arithmetic
  • Math 54 (see note below) Prealgebra (Optional)
  • Math 60 (see note below) Introduction to Algebra
  • Math 95 (see note below) Intermediate Algebra with Modeling
  • Math 98 (see note below) Intermediate Algebra

See the College Catalog for detailed course descriptions.

NOTES

Math 54 is an optional bridge between Math 51 and Math 60. Students who have not had an algebra class before should take Math 54. Students who have below a 3.0 in Math 51 should take Math 54. Students with a grade of 3.0 or higher in Math 51 and who also have a background in algebra may omit Math 54 and take Math 60. If in doubt, talk to or e-mail a math instructor.

Math 60 requirements can be fulfilled by completing Math 58 and Math 59. This option is offered in the Math Lab at the Fort Steilacoom College.

Math 95 or Math 98 is a prerequisite for many courses which fulfill the Quantative/Symbolic Reasoning Skills requirement. For 2005-2006, Math 95 will be taught only at the Fort Steilacoom College.

Math 95 with a grade of at least 2.0 is the prerequisite for Math& 107, Math 170, Math& 146, Anthr 230 and Phil 120.

Math 98 with a grade of at least 2.0 is the prerequisite for Math& 107, Math 170, Math& 281, Math 156, Math& 141, Anthr 230, Chem 139, Cis 201, Econ 212 and Phil 120.
