Conference focused on educational needs of boys features best-selling author
Best-selling author Michael Gurian will be the keynote speaker at a one-day conference exploring the unique learning needs of boys and men at Pierce College Puyallup on Friday, Oct. 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The conference is titled “Our Sons, Our Schools, Our Society” and is aimed at educators and parents. It will include a variety of presentations intended to provide hands-on strategies for improving the learning of boys, including the latest research on male educational issues, case studies from schools that have developed special strategies for meeting the unique educational needs of boys, a presentation on the myths and realities of testosterone as it relates to learning and behavior, and a panel of current and former students discussing educational experiences that helped or hindered their success in school.
The event is co-sponsored by Pierce College Men’s Programs, which has conducted pioneering research into male success rates in college and instituted programs aimed at helping boys and men succeed in school. Program staff have served as expert media sources to outlets from the Boston Globe to ABC News. Gurian will also speak at Pierce College Puyallup on Thursday, Oct 9, at 7 p.m. His topic for that presentation will be What Could He Be Thinking? Understanding the Nature of Boys and Men.
About the keynote speaker
Gurian, a Spokane resident, has written numerous books based on the theory that boys and girls learn differently, including The Wonder of Boys, The Wonder of Girls, and Boys and Girls Learn Differently.
