Designed to strengthen writing skills of those working or planning on working in an office setting. Clarity in communication is stressed using a writing approach the combines shortness and simplicity with strength and sincerity (the 4-S approach). Elements of grammar, punctuation, and proper word usage will be covered.

101 (1) Editing Skills for the Office Professional

Offered through Extended Learning only.

Designed to strengthen editing skills of those working or planning on working in an office setting. Participants will work through a three-step editing process and learn how to achieve a style that is easily read and appropriate to the audience. Proofreading techniques will be introduced and practiced.

104 (3) Dvorak Keyboarding

Students will work with a DVORAK Internet web site to learn to key the alphabet and common punctuation by touch using one-handed keyboarding. Speed and accuracy will be developed through proper keyboarding technique and practice. These keyboarding skills will then be applied to create memorandums, business letters, and reports. Recommended for students with any physical disability of the hands.

111 (3) Keyboarding

Students work with a computer keyboarding program learning to key the alphabet by touch. Optimum speed and accuracy are encouraged through proper keyboarding technique and practice. These keyboarding skills are applied to create basic letters, memos, and reports.

112 (2) Keyboard Skillbuilding I

Prereq: OFFCE 111 with grade of 2.0 or better, or keyboarding skill at 20 wam or higher or instructor permission.

Emphasis on improving keyboarding skills with a computer program that focuses on technique, speed, and accuracy through planned drill and practice exercises.

113 (2) Keyboard Skillbuilding II

Prereq: OFFCE 112 with a grade of 2.0 or better

Focuses on improving keyboarding skills from OFFCE 112 with a computer program that allows student to continue building speed and accuracy through drill and practice.

120 (3) Introduction to Windows

Prereq: OFFCE 111 with a grade of 2.0 or type by touch at 15 wpm or instructor⁏s permission

Fundamentals of using the Windows operating system. Topics include file, document, and folder management; working on and modifying the Windows desktop; customizing your computer using the control panel; and communicating with other computers.

135 (3) Electronic 10-KEY Calculator

Prereq: BUS 107 or BUS 103 recommended.

Use of the numeric keypad on the computer as well as the electronic 10-key calculator for solving office problems with an emphasis on 10-key speed.

Prereq: OFFCE 120, type by touch at 20 wpm or instructor⁏s permission

Principles and procedures for records management including storage and retrieval using manual and computer database systems. Includes hands-on computer applications; alphabetic, subject, numeric and geographic storage methods and control of records.

149 (2) Introduction to the Medical Office

An interpersonal networking course for medical office students. Includes discussion, guest speakers, and assignments relating to topics such as the medical environment, medical staff, medical ethics and law, and the healthcare-related job market.

Fundamentals of medical terminology, including prefixes, suffixes, root words, and basic rules, upon which the student will build a medical vocabulary. Includes basic anatomy and physiology for the medical office worker.

A continuation of OFFCE 150, to build on the student⁏s medical vocabulary by learning advanced terminology and body systems. Includes basic anatomy and physiology for the medical office worker.

Prereq: Grade of 2.0 in OFFCE 120, touch typing at 30 wpm, or instructor⁏s permission

Introduces student to basic features of word processing and spreadsheets followed by integration of the two applications. Introduction to Web page design.

202 (5) Professional Office Applications II

Prereq: Grade of 2.0 in OFFCE 201 and OFFCE 145, or instructor⁏s permission

Introduces student to basic features of database management and presentation programs. Enhances student⁏s knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets. Student will integrate these four applications to create documents for today⁏s office.

Enhances student⁏s skill with advanced features of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. Continuation of integration of these applications.

Basic WordPerfect functions, including saving, printing, blocking, moving, copying, speller, search and replace, headers/footers, and footnotes/endnotes.

Advanced word processing features using Microsoft Word for Windows including inserting borders, frames, and pictures; drawing shapes and objects; creating tables, charts, and outlines, merging documents; sorting text, and advanced editing features.

Prereq: Grade of 2.0 or better in BUS 106 and a word processing course, or instructor⁏s permission

Fundamentals of transcribing dictated letters, memos, and other documents using a computer and transcription equipment. Course provides an opportunity to apply business English skills along with formatting techniques and proofreading skills to produce “mailable” documents.

Prereq: OFFCE 230 with a grade of 2.0 or better

Advanced transcribing techniques emphasizing increased speed and accuracy in the production of business documents. Students will be expected to produce finished documents applying proper business English skills and formatting techniques.

Principles and methods of transcribing dictated legal documents using a computer and transcription equipment.

A seminar course for students in the Office Technology program emphasizing human relations skills to include leadership, assertiveness, handling criticism, conflict resolution, office politics, and diversity in the workplace.

Emphasis on the production of the many forms required for insurance billing, including: HCFA, UB-92, referrals and referral requests. Includes documentation guidelines, effective solutions for insurance claim disputes, posting of accounts receivable and report generation, financial, legal, and ethical issues of medical billing and referral management.

A beginning medical transcription course designed to familiarize users with basic medical reports used in a health care facility, the related terminology, appropriate formats for transcribing reports, and grammar and punctuation rules specific to dictated medical records.

Prereq: OFFICE 251 with a grade of 2.0 or better

Intensive practice in transcribing medical dictation. Students use an extensive list of standard and contemporary terms in different medical specialties while transcribing dictation dictated by actual physicians in realistic surroundings.

Basic procedures in the medical front office with emphasis on the role of the receptionist, records management, bookkeeping, billing, collection procedures, and health insurance.

Basic procedural coding for medical office and hospital billing. Students will learn the American Medical Association⁏s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system and how to legally and ethically apply the system to various healthcare settings.

Prereq: Grade of 2.0 in OFFICE 151

Basic diagnosis for medical office and hospital billing. Students will learn entry-level ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification) coding for healthcare facilities.

Tips and techniques for using software typically found in the law office. Students will learn to use templates, macros, and word processing features that are particularly applicable to the preparation of legal documents. Internet strategies, spreadsheets, litigation support, and time and billing computer applications are also taught.
