Faculty: Kenneth Owen

Kenneth Owen has received enthusiastic response for his conducting from audiences and ensembles alike. He has directed many notable academic ensembles including the Arizona State University Concert Choir, ASU Women’s Chorus, Brigham Young University Concert Choir, the 180-voice BYU Women’s Chorus and others. Ken has also conducted the BYU University and String Orchestras. He has been working with church choirs and community choirs since 1995.

A native of Utah, Ken served as a substitute rehearsal director and section leader for the Utah Chamber Artists, a semi-professional choir in Salt Lake City, and performed with the Orchestra at Temple Square and Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Ken received the Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Utah, where he studied with Frank Wienstock and Dr. Barlow Bradford. Ken went on to study conducting with Dr. Ronald Staheli and to work with the renowned choirs at Brigham Young University. There he received the Master of Music degree in Choral conducting and also studied orchestral conducting, which he continued as a cognate study at ASU with Dr. Timothy Russell. At ASU, under the direction of Dr. David Schildkret, Ken received his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in conducting. He has also studied and worked with such conductors as Paul Salomonovich, Dale Warland, Craig Jessop, Simon Carrington, and Jerry McCoy.

As a pianist and a conductor of both instrumental and choral ensembles, Ken has a wide range of experience and flexibility. He maintains a successful private piano studio and has directed ensembles of all skill levels effectively due to his pedagogical sensitivity and flexible teaching and rehearsal styles.
