Intel,Workforce Development join Pierce College District to fund new online computer classes Pierce College District 11 has received several matching grants, including $139,000 from Intel and funds from Washington s Workforce Development, to put core computer courses online. This is in addition to 35 other credit-bearing distance learning courses offered for the fall quarter beginning Sept. 20. Pierce College Extended Learning offers more than 30 non-credit online courses. The new credit courses will prepare students to tackle the new "Debug" courses that begin during the following winter quarter. The classes will lead to the computer industry s "Debug" certificate for troubleshooting hardware and software. In addition to meeting the needs of students who may have time or travel constraints, these classes will free up computer labs on campus so the need for campus-based classes can be filled without waiting for expensive building projects to be completed. Also, recruiting part-time faculty who are active in the computer industry will be easier because they can respond to their students without making a trip to campus.

Toys become tools of teaching trade

Tinker Toys, Legos and 1-inch strips of webbing are as valuable as classroom tools for Pierce College’s Linda Saarela as overhead projectors and chalk.
In fact, she took her toys/tools to a workshop for the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development’s International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence.

The broad term for what Saarela does is called "active learning," which encompasses anything in the classroom that involves interaction.

"It might be facilitating learning through questions and answers or doing case studies where students prepare together and make a presentation," she said. "It can even be as simple as using a name game to familiarize students with their peers. It means engaging people in learning in some way.

"You have to look at how people learn. It’s by doing and teaching," the business instructor said from her Fort Steilacoom office. "You set up scenarios where people are learning and teaching and it takes that learning from short-term to long-term memory."

Saarela uses Tinker Toys to reinforce lessons on personality types and Legos to set up production lines. Webbing loops can encourage teamwork and problem solving. Some classes and seminars include challenge courses that encourage stretching comfort zones in a physical situation. All are ways to tap into different learning styles.

She said engaging learners is common in education, but often it is not done as well as it could be.

"We need to develop an atmosphere to support the learners, to set the environment so they feel safe to venture to the edge of their comfort zone. Otherwise classroom management can become a problem when using some of the teaching tools," she said. "Research has shown people need to believe they are being respected in order to learn."

Pierce College is on the cutting edge in the nation because of the emphasis on bringing those tools and principles from the instructional side over to the entire institution. As far as Saarela knows, Pierce is the only community college working toward incorporating these practices in any organized way.
