Application Process

The Pierce College Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program was created to provide access for all students including underrepresented populations, males, international/foreign born, older students, and individuals with lower socio-economic profiles.

Our admissions process is unique. The Pierce College ADN Program seeks qualified applicants who are committed to the field of Registered Nursing and who can convey the following attributes associated with the science and art of nursing:

  • Competence
  • Care
  • Culture
  • Compassion

Application handbooks are published each April for the traditional two-year program. All forms and detailed instructions will be included in the handbook when it becomes available. Application handbooks for the LPN-ADN Completion Program are available year-round. They may be downloaded from this site or obtained through the Nursing Program Office.

The admissions process for both programs is a lengthy and intense process, broken down into three phases.

Phase I is designed to determine applicant qualification and, through a point system, establish the pool of candidates who will be allowed to participate in the interview process.

There are two components of the Phase I application packet:

  1. Qualification Elements
    • Application fee
    • Application form
    • Proof of first Hepatitis B injection
    • Course Prerequisite Listing Form and all official transcripts
    • Current Unencumbered Washington State LPN Licence (LPN-ADN Completion Program applicants ONLY)
  2. Scored Elements
    • Functional Resume
    • Professional Letter of Recommendation
    • Personal Letter of Recommendation
    • Personal Statement

Phase II is the first notification and interview process. Applicant status is established based on the scoring committee’s points awarded.

Based on the number of original qualified applicants, a select number of top candidates will be invited to participate in the interview process, which will bear points toward admission. Points from both Phase I and Phase II will be combined to create an applicant’s total score. This score will determine class selection.

Phase III is the selection notification and program preparation phase. Admission notification will be mailed and a small list of alternates will be established. Prior to the start of the program, incoming students must complete the following:

  1. Immunizations:
    • Hepatitis B (3 boosters and a positive titer)
    • MMR (2 boosters or a positive titer)
    • Tetanus (within the last 10 years)
    • TB screening (two-step)
    • Varicella (positive titer)
  2. Certifications/Other:
    • Completion of a 7-hour HIV/AIDS training course
    • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification
    • Current basic first aid certification (N/A for licensed LPN’s)
    • No Record on File report from the Washington State Patrol
    • Proof of current medical insurance

It is critical that prospective students communicate with a pre-nursing advisor regularly and keep abreast of changes related to the admissions process by visiting this site often and/or attending monthly information sessions.
