FAQs

If you have questions this page doesn't anser, please call us.

1. What should I do first?

Contact the testing center at any Pierce College campus to take the ASSET test. With those scores we will know how to place you in English, Math, and Reading. Please note that many computer classes require you to have completed Math 98 - so don't put off taking your Math classes. We offer all the math classes here at Pierce College that you need to successfully complete the program. After testing, contact a CIS advisor at either 964-6489 (Fort Steilacoom) or 864-3301 (Puyallup) for an appointment as soon as you have the results. If you have taken courses at another college, please also bring a copy of your transcripts (unofficial is fine) so we can determine the courses that you will need to take.

2. Can I start any quarter?

Yes, however certain classes only are offered select quarters and many have prerequisites. Be sure you meet with an advisor to identify those classes and quarters, otherwise it might alter your graduation date.

3. Which degree is the most marketable?

All of our degrees are marketable. Choose a degree program based on the type of work you would enjoy doing for the next five to ten years. Check out the WOIS system in the advising center to find out the predicted growth, salaries, job requirements, typical duties, etc., associated with each of the different computer career paths. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), can answer many of your career questions also.

4. Do I need a computer at home?

No. We have several computer labs on campus open up to seven days a week for student use. However, having a computer at home can be beneficial as the programs require both time and hands-on practice.
