Academic Policies and Records

Academic Standards

Academic standards are established at Pierce College to ensure that the resources of the college are used in the best interest of all its current and potential students and to encourage students to assume responsibility for their own formal education. Academic standards also help to ensure that students with academic difficulties are made aware of the opportunities provided for them at Pierce College.

Honors

Your name is placed on the quarterly Dean's List if you achieve a 3.5 to 3.89 grade point average and complete at least 15 credits during a quarter.

If you achieve a 3.9 to 4.0 grade point average and complete at least 15 credits during a quarter, your name will be on the quarterly President's List.

Graduating with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above for all work, with a minimum of 25 credits earned at Pierce College, qualifies you as an honors graduate.

Academic Deficiency

You are considered academically deficient if your grade point average is below 2.0 during any given quarter. If you are academically deficient you will be notified and informed of the conditions of your academic status at the end of the quarter.

You may face dismissal (at the discretion of the Academic Review Board) if you are academically deficient for three or more quarters. If you wish to appeal academic dismissal you must schedule an appointment to appear before the Academic Review Board.

If you are dismissed from Pierce College for academic reasons, you may, after four quarters' absence, reapply for admission to the college without appealing to the Academic Review Board.

This policy applies to students who have registered for six or more credits per quarter for courses numbered 050-299.

Resources are available to help students who are having difficulty with coursework. If you want help in maintaining scholarship requirements, check with your faculty advisor or the director of student development at Fort Steilacoom and Puyallup.

Academic Dishonesty

If you use another person's ideas, words, music, artwork, computations, models, etc., in such a manner as to imply that the thing used was your own; or if you use notes, texts or memory aids during tests when such use was not expressly authorized; or if you steal or knowingly use test master copies to gain information prior to an examination date; or knowingly allow another person to use your work as if it were that other person's work; or otherwise act in such a manner as to gain for yourself or another an unfair advantage over other students, you may face disciplinary actions as stated in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy/Code of Conduct.
