Dental Hygiene is a rapidly growing profession for qualified individuals who wish to participate as active members of a health profession licensed to provide direct services to patients while working in various practice settings. Professional education of a minimum of two full years in an accredited dental hygiene program is required before eligibility for licensure.
Pierce College's Dental Hygiene program enables students to take both written and practical examinations for licensure in this jurisdiction and in others. The course of study will be applicable to degree completion programs and for entrance requirements to dental schools where courses and credits apply. Since 1990, the University of Washington will accept a total of 135 community college credits for transferring dental hygiene coursework for a Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene. Half of the credits will be general education credits and half will be vocational program credits. Eastern Washington University offers an expanded Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene Degree Program at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom. The curriculum design provides the working dental hygienist with part-time courses offered in the evenings at the Fort Steilacoom campus and some courses through distance learning and online. Acceptance into this program is dependent on previous academic course work at an accredited dental hygiene program and current licensure. Please contact Monica L. Hospenthal, EWU Program Coordinator, at (253) 912-3642 for applicant materials and more information.
The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Education.
Applicants to the program must meet the general entrance requirements of Pierce College and should have completed one year of high school algebra, biology, and chemistry or the college equivalent of Math 060, Biology 101 and Chemistry 100.
