Field Equipment Recommendations

Earth and Space Sciences Department, Pierce College Puyallup

Below are my recommendations for rock hammers and hand lenses. This supplier tends to have the best prices. If you are looking for something other than a rock hammer or hand lens, they are likely to have it, as well.

Estwing Long Handle Rock Pick

This rock pick, with its 16-inch length and 23-ounce head, provides power for breaking harder rocks.

Estwing Pointed Tip Rock Pick

This is the same as the long handle rock hammer but a little easier to handle and a little more economical.

Hastings Triplet Hand Lens, 10x

This is the hand lens to get. Hastings 10x by Bausch &  Lomb provides high quality optics with a wide field of view.

Hastings Triplet Hand Lens, 14x

This 14x hand lens is recommended only as a supplement to the 10x above if you will be observing very small materials. The optics are excellent, but the field of view is a trade-off for the greater magnification.
