| Question: Give an example of one piece of identity and how it is shaped by internal and external demands.
Answer: Racial identity is shaped by internal and external demands. Externally, a person's identity is shaped by the color of their skin. They are treated in different ways by different people because of their racial background. Internally, a person must take the things they learn from external demands and apply them to themselves. Question: Choose either the minority or majority/white identity development model. Give an example of an experience that might move someone from one stage to the next stage. State which stages. Answer: Majority/White identity The white person who is suddenly transplanted from an all white neighborhood to one in which minorities are in the majority will become aware of the differences in how minorities are treated. They will pass into what is known as the "pro-minority stage," in which they want to solve all the problems minorities face, and will try to emulate the culture of the minority group. |
