Teacher's note: Excellent example of integration of concept

Questions such as "during this quarter I have heard remarks making fun of GLBT people or issues" and "I believe that GLBT people feel safe on this campus'1 shines some light on people's tendency to display an egocentric bias. Since the majority of people's perceptual thinking lies within a heterosexual mentality the tendency to overestimate the degree to which others think feel, and behave as you do is quite common. Hearing homosexual jokes and gay comments at least once, if not on a

regular basis, were admitted to being heard in the classroom by 62% of the people surveyed. Yet, 80% of them agreed or felt partial to the fact that they did feel safe on campus. Could this conclusion of a safe campus be drawn off of the assumption that since we view the majority of people to be similar to us and our heterosexual ways that we simply turn a blind eye to the numerous occasions when slanderous remarks threatens an individuals personal safety?
