Ethics Class Course Information

Course Title: Ethics For Chemical Dependency Professionals

Catalogue # ALCDA 217

This is a three credit course intended to provide an overview and orientation to the ethical standards and principles of professionalism expected of persons intending to practice chemical dependency counseling in Washington State.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, students will gain a knowledge of:

  • What constitutes an ethic, and the factors and conditions that contribute to the formation of a personal ethic;
  • The principles of professionalism in the chemical dependency counseling field, with an emphasis on professional ethics and client confidentiality;
  • What personal prejudices or value conflicts could serve as a barrier to or impede the delivery of quality professional care;
  • The range of factors that could contribute to exposure to a personal or professional conflict;
  • What action to take if confronted with an ethical conflict; and
  • The standards of professional conduct endorsed by the various national chemical dependency professional member associations and certification bodies.
