Course Title: The Law For Chemical Dependency Professionals

Catalogue # ALCDA 216

This is a two credit course intended to provide an overview and orientation to how public policy is engineered in to laws, rules, and regulation, and an in-depth examination of the laws associated with the practice of chemical dependency counseling in Washington State.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, students will gain a knowledge of:

  • A law’s relationship to public values;
  • The process involved in transforming an idea into law;
  • How to find, read, and understand the content of Washington State’s laws;
  • How to relate to the legal system on behalf of a client;
  • How to distinguish between a statutory and an administrative law;
  • The federal and state laws governing the protection of client confidentiality; and,
  • The laws governing professional conduct for chemical dependency counselors.
