Work-Study Library Aide Job Description

The goal of the campus library is to support the academic and intellectual life of the campus. The library offers a variety of resources to support the curriculum and scholarly pursuits of faculty, staff and students while tending to recreational reading needs of the campus.


  • Assist customers/patrons at the front counter
  • Check out materials to students, faculty, staff and community members
  • Check in returned materials, except mobile equipment (e.g., cameras, iPads, laptops)
  • Shelve books, magazines/periodicals, and DVDs
  • Straighten, organize, and clean assigned shelves
  • Answer non-reference questions about the library
  • Help patrons in need of assistance, such as those that cannot find a book or who are having trouble with computers/printing
  • Check all book drop(s) for returned library materials
  • Inventory the library’s tangible collections
  • Maintain neatness and cleanliness of the library
  • Create a friendly approachable atmosphere and environment
  • Other library tasks that are deemed necessary


  • Must be reliable
  • Ability to read and speak English
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions
  • Must be able to bend and stretch to reach high and low places
  • Must be able to push fully loaded book carts
  • Willing to use computers and learn how to navigate computer programs
  • Willingness to clean
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must be willing to accept direction from others not in their direct line of supervision
