Pierce College Library Text Reference Policy
Pierce College Library-Puyallup offers a Text Reference service that allows students to send questions directly to a librarian using text messaging.
There are two ways students can use this service:
- Standard text messaging using the following phone number: 253-370-8969
- Through e-mail using the following e-mail address: email@example.com
How This Service Works
Questions sent to a librarian through the text messaging service will only be answered during regular reference desk hours. See general reference desk hours below:
- Monday–Thursday: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Friday: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Saturday: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Standard messaging and data rates apply. Students should refer to their wireless service contract to know how much it will cost to send and receive text messages. Students can also send a text message to a librarian using the above e-mail. Questions sent and received through the e-mail service will avoid text messaging fees but may be subject to data service fees if sent from a mobile phone. Students may also use the e-mail address to send messages to a librarian from a computer.
Questions sent through the text messaging service should be short and able to be answered in a single text message (160 characters). More detailed questions should be asked directly to a librarian in person, over the phone, through an e-mail or using the Ask A Librarian chat reference service.
All information exchanged through text messaging is held in the strictest confidence by Pierce College librarians. Use of this service constitutes consent for the library to use the transcript of the interaction for research and training purposes, provided that all identifying information about the user is deleted.
