Ten years ago, Jessica Crowe put her career and education goals on hold in order to raise her two young boys, ages 7 and 10. It wasn’t until a couple years ago that she decided her boys were old enough for her to begin focusing on her education and start working toward her goal of becoming a doctor.
As a single, working parent, she has little time to spare but still manages to earn a 3.97 GPA. Crowe says her boys inspire her to do the best she can in class. “My sons know my dreams and support me in a way no one else can,” she said. “They believe in me without wondering if I can accomplish this dream.”
In 2014, Crowe joined the U.S. Army Reserves and became a combat medic. During her training, she had the opportunity to visit a burn unit, where she met several veterans recovering from serious injuries. It was this experience that inspired her to pursue a career in medicine to help transform the recovery and rehabilitation process. “I met so many veterans who had been through a lot of really traumatic events,” she said. “They would talk about all the things they really missed being able to do, like being physically active and participating in family activities. This is really what sparked my interest in physical therapy.”
Crowe is studying Kinesiology at Pierce College, and loves the hands-on, practical experience she has gained through the program. “I’ve had such a fantastic time in the program, and I’ve been able to experience so many things,” she said. “It’s not just about going to classes and lectures.”
She also completed in an internship at a local physical therapy office, where she still volunteers today. “This journey is all about me trying to be a good mom and a good student at the same time,” she said. “Pretty soon, my focus will be on being a good mom and having a successful career.”
Students who comprise the All Washington Academic Team reflect the diversity of the state, maintain high standards of excellence and contribute positively to the community. Students will be honored for their achievements during a special ceremony on Thursday, March 21 at South Puget Sound Community College.
