Details of Course Structure

Required online study begins in August. Required on-site attendance, at the Lakewood, Washington Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, is scheduled Monday through Friday (excludes Labor Day) and occasionally one Saturday in late August and/or early September. We attempt to offer either the Central Regional Dental Testing or Western Regional Examining Board licensing exam on the Saturday at the end of the course for your convenience.

For the year of 2022, we regretfully are unable to offer any courses due to the delay in the construction of our new clinic. We hope to be able to offer the Restorative Course in 2023.

Please anticipate hours to be in the range from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This Is a Non-credit Course

  • Total clock hours is 110 and roughly equates to six (6) Pierce College quarter credits. However, please be advised that this is not a college credit course and you will not receive credit for successful completion.
  • You will receive a Certificate of Completion once you successfully pass all competency requirements of the course.
  • Both the online study and in-class/onsite attendance is required.

Online Study

  • 30–40 hours. Must have computer and internet access. Tablets and smartphones will not fully work. You must have access to a computer.
  • Begins approximately six (6) weeks prior to onsite attendance.

In-class/Onsite Attendance

  • Required onsite attendance is at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood, Washington.
  • 70 hours over two weeks. May include a Saturday. Includes didactic, lab with Mock Board, and three days of patient clinic.

Costs, Text and Supplies

  • Fees include instrument purchase, lab coat use, and liability insurance, and is paid at time of registration. Please see the refund policy located on the Application page.
    • Course, instrument purchase, lab coat use, liability insurance fee: $5,200.00
    • Restorative instrument rental fee: $1,800.00, paid the first day of class. This is refundable upon return of the kit in good condition less a $100.00 administrative fee. Damage of missing instruments will be charged to you over the $100.00 fee. Documentation to get your license will be withheld until all fees are paid.

        Estimated cost is $60.
      • Students may purchase their textbook through any online source, including Pearson Education, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and Barnes & Noble.com.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Lab Coats & PPE

  • Pierce College furnishes students with lab coats and level 3 surgical masks for typodont lab activities.
  • Pierce College cannot fit-test and supply N95 respirators to the student for use during patient care. Students must arrange to have a minimum of ten FDA approved N95 respirators for use during patient care.
  • If a student damages the lab coat, an additional charge will apply to replace the lab coats and collected before the Certificate of Completion and licensing documents are provided.

Clinic Attire

  • Students are expected to be clean, and to wear close-toed shoes with non-mesh uppers and non-skid soles.
  • Scrubs are acceptable and/or full length pants in a neutral color such as beige, tan, taupe, black, brown, etc. Pants may not touch the ground and must have full coverage (no low-rise pants, cropped, etc.).
  • Students must comply with all COVID safety protocols and processes. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the course. Information will be sent to you in the information packet.
  • Jeans are acceptable in labs only and may not have any holes or tears in them.
  • Additional detailed information will be sent to you in the information packet by July 15.

Safety Glasses and Loupes

  • Students must furnish their own appropriate safety glasses based on OSHA guidelines for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Magnification support is recommended such as very strong magnifying glasses or loupes.
