Pierce College has been selected as one of just seven colleges statewide to participate in College Spark Washington's inaugural Evolve Learning and Action Cohort, a new initiative recognizing institutions that demonstrate courageous leadership in advancing equity, inclusion, belonging and racial justice.

"We are honored to be recognized for work that is central to our mission of serving students and strengthening our communities," said Pierce College Chancellor and CEO Julie White, Ph.D. "We look forward to working with our partner colleges across the state over the next three years to strengthen our collective ability to support Washington students."

The cohort brings together seven Washington State community and technical colleges that have shown a strong commitment to creating equitable student outcomes and fostering inclusive campus communities.

Pierce College was invited to join the cohort based on its demonstrated leadership in equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. The college has developed measurable strategies to advance equitable student success, maintained a commitment to accountability and transparency in its equity planning, and continued to communicate publicly about racial justice.

As a member of the Evolve Learning and Action Cohort, Pierce College will receive grant funding to advance institutional equity priorities and innovation. The college will also participate in a learning community with peer institutions committed to advancing equity and belonging.

According to Dr. Warren Brown, CEO of College Spark Washington, the institutions selected for the cohort have demonstrated a commitment to advancing racial justice during a time of significant challenges.

"Throughout our nation's history, progress toward racial justice has depended on people and institutions willing to keep moving forward even when the political winds shift," Brown said. "The colleges participating in the Evolve Learning and Action Cohort have demonstrated a willingness to continue that work with courage and conviction at a time when doing so carries real challenges. We recognize their commitment, thank them for their leadership, and look forward to learning alongside them."

The Evolve Learning and Action Cohort aims to help participating colleges strengthen institutional practices, foster belonging and improve outcomes for students through collaboration, reflection and action.
