Pierce College student Gavin Reeber was recently recognized for civic leadership at
a special event hosted by the Washington Campus Compact. The Student Civic Leadership
Award recognizes up to two students per college for their work in civic engagement
and social entrepreneurship. Pierce College Puyallup Interim President Matt Campbell,
Ed.D., presented the award to Reeber during a special ceremony in Seattle.
Reeber works in the Pierce College Service Learning Department, and helps staff the
Nourish Mobile Food Bank, which is located at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom every
Wednesday from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
“Gavin dedicates so much of himself and his time to being a part of the solution to
the problem of food insecurity in his community,” said Service Learning Manager Emily
Feleen. “He truly lives out the values and mission of Pierce College and it is a pleasure
working with him. I know he will continue to be an exemplary member of his community
wherever his journey takes him after Pierce.”
Reeber recently created a video to promote the mobile food bank, to show students the type of food available and how
to take advantage of this resource. The video was released in May, which is also Hunger
Awareness Month.
“My mom was a single mom of four kids, and we grew up using resources like the Nourish
Mobile Food Bank,” Reeber said. “It means a lot to be there helping others with resources
that I’ve used myself.”
